Everyone is in Minnesota!

Rob, Amelia, and I have been vacationing in Minnesota. After they left me in Vermont for a week by myself, I flew to Minnesota to spend the week of the fourth at home in Minnesota. My parents picked me up at the airport, and we drove up to the Ward cabin near Hackensack, MN. We had a wonderful weekend at the cabin with Rob's family. My parents left on Sunday morning, and following tradition, we went to Rob's grandmother's sister's place on Woman Lake for the annual family fourth of July parade and picnic. After parading through the property in various vehicles, we picnicked on the beach. Amelia spent most of the afternoon in the lake, and we all got lots of sun.

Amelia is working on her language. She now is able to say shoes. She says "bye" appropriately, and is very social. She learned how to start and stop the washer and dryer at the lake home, which is not as helpful as I am sure she intends to be. She spent her days in the water, playing on the beach, going for walks, and playing with her toys and books inside the screened porch. The most exciting moment was when she stepped right off the dock as she was walking on it and fell into the water. Fortunately, she was wearing a life jacket, which brought her face right up to the water. She was startled though, and she even cried a little from all the excitement.

As always, it is good to spend quality time with Rob's family on Arthur's Point. I was so sad this morning when we left, because I know we won't be spending as much time there as we have in the past. I am sure Rob and Amelia will take one more trip to MN this summer, but it isn't the same as in the past when we were able to go up every weekend in the summer.

We are now at my parents' farm in Gibbon. We'll be here for the weekend, and then back to Vermont. Everyone in Minnesota enjoys Amelia's visits!

Long Distance Vacationing

Amelia and Rob are back in Minnesota, while I am starting my first rotation here in Vermont. They are up at the cabin with Rob's parents, and I call constantly! It sounds like everyone is having a wonderful time together, and the grandparents are enjoying Amelia! Last time I called, she was obsessed with the phone and wouldn't let Rob talk to me. I heard her babble through the phone, and I told her about all the things I've been doing here in Vermont.

I spent the weekend in New York City with Rob's sister Suzanne since I had the weekend to myself. It was so nice to see Suzanne and her husband Matt and to visit the big city for the first time. I had an enjoyable Sunday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and took the time to read about the paintings I was interested in. This is something that would be difficult if I had little Amelia along! Since I went to the Picasso exhibit, I purchased a book about Picasso for kids. I may bring her to the museum in the future, but it will be a different type of visit! Eventually, I can't wait to go to big museums with her when she is interested in the art as well!

I took the train from New Haven, CT into the city. It went smoothly, until the train stalled on the tracks on my way home Sunday evening. After transferring to another train right out there on the tracks, I finally arrived in New Haven three hours after the scheduled arrival time. Then, I had a 5 hour drive home, during which I witnessed a terrible accident, and I finally got home at 2am. Wow, what a trip. Despite my preference for train travel, next time if Rob and Amelia come along, we may consider driving into the city and parking outside of Suzanne's apartment. I hear driving into the city is not bad on the weekends, especially with a GPS.

I started my cytopatholog rotation this week. It basically involves learning how to interpret cervical pap smears. There is much more to cytolopathology, but this will be the focus for my first month. Honestly, this program is so great. Everyone is very kind and the learning experience is enjoyable. I am confident that I found the perfect program for me. But too bad it is so far from home!

The past two evenings I spent shopping in the area since no one else is home. It has been fun to explore the Church Street area in Burlington, which is a cobblestone walking street with lots of great shops! This evening I went to an outlet center in a nearby town. I bought Amelia a cute fourth of July outfit that I can't wait to put on her when I meet them at the cabin in MN this weekend!

Road trip to Middlebury

Every time we move, there are always things to buy for the house. This time, it is even more fun since we are finally homeowners again, and of course, because it is fun to buy toddler stuff for Amelia. So, I am addicted to Craigslist. Every night, I spend at least an hour browsing all the Craigslist Vermont postings. I was especially excited to find a few sets of old school Fischer Price Little Tykes stuff. You know, the barn that makes all the fun noises, the house that little tots can set up, and a little town and a few vehicles. Rob's mother already has the barn at the cabin, and Amelia LOVES it, so I thought these would be a good buy. However, we had to drive an hour south to Middlebury to get them.

We started our road trip this morning at around 11:30 because Amelia took an unexpected morning nap. After grabbing some delicious iced coffee, which I am now addicted to, we headed south on route 7 to Shelburne to visit the well advertised Shelburne Farms. We decided to get a membership since it is only 30 minutes from our house and it seems like a place Amelia will enjoy during our entire stay in VT. After paying for our membership, the tractor was ready to take everyone to the main farm area. Right as we get onto the trailor, we smell Amelia's diaper. There was no time to change it, but fortunately, we were at a farm so no one could tell that she smelled so bad. She loved riding in the trailor, and I promptly changed her diaper once we reached the main farm area.

Amelia spent nearly two hours exploring the children's barn. She walked into the chicken coup and petted the chickens. She climbed the railing and petted the cows. She sat on the toy John Deer tractors and tried to scoot around. She has a little red car at home, so she is accustomed to this kind of activity! She roamed the barnyard and fed the goats and chased the chickens. It was the perfect place for her because she was able to run freely and do as she pleased, which is exactly what she likes to do! She also enjoyed washing her hands at the end because there was a stool there just her height. I enjoyed the Green Mountain Coffee they served at the Farm Shack. I think I have developed an addiction to this coffee at this point.

We got back on the road and headed further south to Middlebury. There are a few other lovely little towns along route 7 with some interesting places to visit, but we could only do so much in one day. We made it to Middlebury by mid afternoon and picked up the Fischer Price toys. Then, Rob was STARVING! He failed to mention this to me until it was a true emergency. Rather than stopping at the nearest A&W, I insisted we drive into the center of the town to try a fun restaurant. This was a nightmare. I tried to direct him while looking at my google maps on my iphone, but obviously he couldn't read my mind as I gave him poor directions. So, he typed "American Flatbread" into the Tom Tom. This is a delicious Vermont pizza chain that we already know we like. The Tom Tom gave us a round about way to get there which included driving on a tiny covered bridge across the river, which caused Rob to scream in terror as he drove. When we finally arrived at the American Flatbread site, we discovered they are only open on Friday and Sat nights. BUMMER! Nearby was Noonie's Deli. Although we took a picture of the sign for Rob's sister, Suzanne, who was referred to as "Noonie" as a child, Rob didn't think it looked like a good spot. So, we carefully followed google maps and found our way downtown. We found a delightful tavern and had delicious New England clam chowder, fondue, and lobster mac & cheese. Amelia LOVED scooping the mac & cheese from plate to plate, and Rob and I enjoyed watching part of the Italy vs Paraguay world cup game.


It ended up being a lovely day trip, but we arrived home early in the evening exhausted. Amelia loves her new toys. We are only putting one out at a time for her, and tonight it was the little house. After a late evening family walk, during which we met a couple that lives two houses down, Rob and I are enjoying ice cream and a delicious Vermont rose. But, we realize, the next time we buy ice cream, it should be Ben & Jerry's since we live in Vermont now.

Family blog ?

I, or I should say, we, are new to blogging. Well, sort of. Rob had his own website in the past, and we have blogged during some of our previous travels on that website. But blogging while traveling is different from a family blog. Since we have moved far from our friends and families, it is time to give it a try! I am hoping Rob gets into this, because he is more talented at blogging. He knows just how to describe our lives in the most entertaining ways.

We are sad to leave Minnesota but are thankful for my mother and Rob's parents who helped us with this huge move. On a happier note, we are in love with our new home in a quiet corner of greater Burlington. Rob and Amelia are both fond of the jetted tub...she likes to turn the jets on and off. I am happy to live on a dead end road where I can relax while Amelia runs up and down our driveway.

Hopefully, we'll be able to keep the blog going and provide some entertainment for anyone who is interested in Amelia's adventures out East!
